Tag Groups allow you to create custom tables that track multiple rows of structured data on your assets, shells, or projects. Unlike standard tags — which capture a single value per record — tag groups function like embedded spreadsheets, where each record can have many rows of data with defined columns.
For example, you might use a tag group to track all HVAC units at a property, renovation line items per unit, or a list of vendors with associated attributes — all without leaving Banner.
Setting Up a Tag Group
Tag groups are created by admin users in Settings → Tag Groups → Add Tag Group.
When creating a tag group, you'll configure:
Name — The display name for your tag group table
Data Type — Whether the table lives on an Asset, Shell, or Project
Parent — Which custom table or parent tag group this lives under
Adding Columns
After creating a tag group, you define its columns by adding individual tags with Tag Data set to "Tag Group" and selecting your tag group as the Tag Location. Each tag you add becomes a column in the table. You can use any tag field type as a column — text, number, dropdown, date, users, files, and more.
Entering Data
Navigate to the relevant Asset, Shell, or Project and locate your tag group table. Click + Add Row to enter a new row of data. You can also edit existing rows inline by clicking into any cell, or delete rows you no longer need.
Nested Tag Groups
Tag groups can be nested inside other tag groups to create hierarchical data structures. For example, a "Buildings" tag group could contain a nested "Units" tag group, which itself contains a "Renovations" tag group. Use the breadcrumb navigation within the table to move between levels.
Aggregation
When Aggregate Children is enabled on a tag group, Banner automatically sums numeric column values and counts rows across nested levels. A total row at the bottom of the table displays the aggregated values. You can hide this row by enabling Hide Total Row in the tag group settings.
Bulk Import
To load data in bulk, use the CSV Import option within the tag group table. Download the template first to see the expected column format, then upload your completed spreadsheet. Banner will validate and import your data row by row.
Dashboard Integration
Tag groups can be linked to Custom Dashboard components, making your structured data visible alongside other project metrics. To connect a tag group to a dashboard, set the Component field in the tag group's settings. You can also configure individual column tags with Dashboard Filter enabled, allowing users to filter the tag group table directly from the dashboard.
